39 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 28.03.2018 MTP Classics Y8 British Museum Report Tuesday, 20th February: To support the boys’ Art, Classics and History, Y8 visited the Parthenon Sculptures, sometimes called ‘The Elgin Marbles’, at the British Museum. With Mr Waddington, the boys learned how the incredibly sophisticated and complex Parthenon building was constructed, with its sculptures in the round (pedimental), in high relief (metopes) and in low relief (frieze). Mr McConnell debated with the boys as to whether the Parthenon Sculptures should be in London or Athens. With Mr Roach’s guidance, the boys sketched a metope of their choice. After lunch, the boys particularly enjoyed seeing earlier Assyrian monumental sculpture, and discussing how it influenced later civilisations like the Greeks. They also sketched their favourite segment of the famous lion hunt friezes. RW Assyrian Gallery DebatingWith AM Lion Hunt Y8Metope Sketching AMetope
