29 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 05.04.2019 MTP IT Computing News March 2019 Tuesday 26th March saw Year 7 boys compete in the first round of the annual Race For The Line competition. Students must design a rocket powered car, working out the most efficient aerodynamic design, then carving their shape into a foam block, using a variety of tools. There are strict rules about the process and the boys did well to adhere to the stringent instructions. The boys used a wind tunnel app on the school iPads to help them craft their cars, before heading to the Art and DT room. Mr Roach oversaw that part of the competition. Upstairs, Mr van Straten helped the boys design racing wheels, using the Sketch Up program. Then, the designs were sent for construction on the 3D printer. The weather was kind on the day, and all eight competing teams saw their cars race along the 20 metre track successfully. The gap between the top three cars was very narrow, testament to the boys’ skill and determination in building a set of speedy wheels! The eventual winning car reached a top speed of 81 MPH. The fastest team went through to the regional final, held at Imperial War Museum Duxford, near Cambridge where they had a great day but were unsuccessful in progressing further.
