21 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 23.10.2020 MTP Classics Y4 Archaeology Morning Back in March, the boys put two objects each in a Y3D or a Y3W box, and then buried these boxes on the School grounds. Sadly, due to Covid-19 related requirements, the boys were not able to participate in their excavation this time. However, they were very excited to see what had happened to the boxes and their objects! Thank you to Mr Cuddy and Mr Lake who excavated them. This month we examined the boxes, and thought about how the earth above them had compacted them over six months. The boys also noted how the box which had been buried nearer the river was muddier and wetter. Mrs Waddell explained how archaeology was useful to historians, and Mr Waddington outlined how and why we still find hoards today. The boys really enjoyed examining their objects. They understood why many organic materials had decayed or disappeared. Interestingly, not all had, and the boys formed hypotheses as to why that was. Nearly all of the inorganic objects were discovered, although they were very muddy! Thank you too to Mrs Jones, Mrs Scales and Mrs Vohora who helped to direct the boys as they explored and documented their finds (and washed their hands!). Mr Waddington Head of Classics
