35 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 10.02.2022 MTP History In my opinion, the main cause of the execution was personal reasons because Richard Whiting was accused of treason and Henry wanted to close down Glastonbury Abbey. It is also important to consider economics, because Henry VIII’s wanted to take down France just like his idol Henry V. Henry wanted good troops so needed to have more money. To get more money, Henry needed to close down Glastonbury Abbey. Overall I think that personal reasons were the most important reason because Richard Whiting was technically saying no to the King. Henry did not allow people to get in the way of what he wanted. Jey Thevarajah Arguments About Causes of Whiting’s Excecution In my opinion, the main cause was political factors. I think this caused the execution of Whiting because Henry wanted everyone to know that he was more important than the church. Henry had to win. It is also important to consider economic factors. Money was important because Henry did this for money. He closed the monasteries as he was using the church to give him money and to give him his divorce. However, politics was a more important cause of the execution than economics because Henry wanted to show the world that he was the best and that no one can compare to him. Arjun Natarajan I think that the most important reason for the execution was economic. Money was important because Henry wanted the treasures of Glastonbury Abbey. It was also important to consider political factors of the execution because Henry VIII wanted to show that he had power over the church and was in control. However, I think that economic reasons were a more important cause than political ones because it was Henry’s greed for money that caused his desire to have power over the church in the first place. Arav Malde In my opinion, the main cause was politics. I think this caused the execution of Whiting because Henry needed to demonstrate his power over the Church and didn’t want to show weakness. He wanted to make it clear that he was the Head of the Church and more powerful than its leaders. It is also important to consider economics. This helped to cause the execution of the elderly Abbot because Henry wanted to fight France, but didn’t have the money to do this. The riches of Glastonbury Abbey would help him achieve this goal. However, I think that political factors were a more important cause than economic ones because Henry needed to send a message. He had already faced rebellions over the dissolution of the monasteries and needed to make people scared to stand against him. This means that the need to show power was more important than gaining money. Khush Galaiya Colour coding by Ammaar Jaffer
