18 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 25.03.2022 MTP Year 3 Archaeology Project On Friday 11th March, Y3 began their Archaeology Project. Mr Waddington discussed with the boys what would be left behind of Mr McConnell - who kindly ‘played dead’ for us - his clothes and possessions after burial. We explored what the work of archaeologists is, and why it is an important part of piecing together the past. The boys chose two objects to bury in boxes on the School grounds. They each picked something, which they thought would change, and something, which they thought, would not. All the boys made a prediction about what would happen to their objects and recorded their theories in their Latin books. They also noted how the site looked, how the deposits were marked, and what the soil was like. The boys particularly enjoyed getting muddy as they helped Mr Lake to carry and bury the boxes! In the Autumn Term of Y4, we will excavate the boxes, and see what changes have been brought upon the boys’ objects. The boys will learn if their hypotheses were correct, and will record what will have happened. They will also learn the reasons for these changes. This activity will support their learning in Classics, History and Science. Many thanks to Mr Waddington, Mr McConnell, Ms Benson, Mrs Wookey, Mrs Daley, Mr Harper, Mr Lake and Mrs McManus for their help. Ms Katsarou Head of Classics What would be left behind?
