54 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 25.03.2022 MTP Computing Computing Boys have been engaged in a wide range of activities this term. For the first time, our Digital Leader has been helping to teach Year 1 and 2 students, alongside some of our Pre-Prep mentors. Their help has been invaluable. Years 1 and 2 have been practising their touch typing, both on the iPads and laptops. This is a vital life skill and one that continues through to the Prep. For World Book Day, Year 2 tried their hand at coding multimedia stories. Years 5 to 8 have made multimedia video poems, based on a selection of poems about empathy – one of our Learning Dispositions. You can see an example online here, produced by Keshav in Year 8. Year 6 celebrated International Women’s Day by producing presentations about famous women in Computing. Ada Lovelace was a popular choice, alongside Grace Hopper and Katherine Johnson, who coded core programs for the Apollo 11 moon landing. All boys from Years 3 to 8 took part in the Bebras last term. It’s an international computational thinking competition. We were delighted that ten boys in Years 6 and 7 came in the top 10% nationally. They were selected for the even more challenging Oxford University Computing Challenge that took place in early March. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and commitment that boys at MTP show towards developing their digital skills. In particular, it is super to see the growing numbers of boys producing their own content as part of Enrichment. Mr van Straten Head of Computing & Digital Learning Digital Leader Helps Year 1
