33 Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Newsletter - 14.10.2022 MTP Modern Languages The European day of Languages was first celebrated in 2001 and has now become an annual event. The aim is to extend the range of languages people learn throughout their lives in order to improve intercultural understanding. In 2021 pupils presented their “home language” to the class and Madame Jasieczek taught some Polish words to her groups. Madame Lad’s classes enjoyed sharing all the different languages spoken amongst the families in the school community. This September we chose to focus on one language: Italian. The boys learned a few phrases in Italian and can now treat their parents to a coffee, an ice cream, and a pasta meal, should they decide to spend their next holiday in Italy. The kitchen provided a welcome “taste of Italy” over the course of the week and we were most appreciative of the lovely pizza, pasta, salads, Bolognese sauce, chicken, and delicious desserts. Parents may wish to ask their son about the Italian names for the different shapes of pasta, but this comes with a warning: he may launch into singing the pasta song, and the tune will go round in your head for days to come!
